I have been hooked on Eric Roberson lately...just got finished listening to "New Born Child". I love, love, LOVE R&B...especially when someone has a beautiful voice. I wish so bad that I could sing lol so I "sing" vicariously through the songs I listen to. And...subject D to my awful warbling while I'm in the shower. While I do enjoy *real* hip-hop, nothing gets to me like some good slow songs. I, like most people I know, grew up listening to Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Michael Jackson and so many others. I also really, really, truly love Jazz. This is thanks to my Daddy. I cannot remember a weekend growing up when the sounds of Al Jarreau, Kim Pensyl, David Sanborn, George Benson, etc. did not lull me to sleep. I'm so familiar with it that there have been a few times where I'm in a grocery store with someone and I'm humming along mindlessly to a Jazz tune and they ask me, "How do you know this song??". I remember sitting with my Daddy, in his lap, for hours listening to Jazz songs. He'd help me remember the words and we'd sing along together. I remember having cookouts in the front yard...it wasn't complete until the big speakers were propped up in the windows and Jazz music was blasting. I'm sure you know how people associate smells, sounds, tastes with certain experiences or memories. For me, when I hear certain songs it takes me right back to being 8 years old and my parent's card parties and family get-togethers.
I love that my Daddy has given me such a deep appreciation and respect for this genre of music. He's one of the coolest dudes I know.
LOL! I had another pic of him driving, hat tipped to the side but for some reason it wouldn't attach. That's ok, though...I don't know how much coolness yall could handle in one post. LOL!
I love, love, love music and I don't know what I'd do without it. How many times has a good love song gotten you through a bad breakup? How many times have you went completely apeshit because "your song!!!!" just came on in the club? How many people remember the song they lost their virginity to...had their first kiss to? How many people have comtemplated taking piano lessons just so they could play that one song they love so much? Or...is that just me? LOL!
How do you feel about music?

Ok, so I'll give you the radio edit of the words and thoughts your post has produced in my head...
When I think of my childhood, I think of CeCe Peniston, Shanice, ABC, The Boys (whatever happened to them?)The memories of me and my sister making up dancing on the steps of our estate...
My first kiss was to Changing Faces-Ghett O.U.T....ahh-his name was Lee...he was my brothers friend and 2 years younger...
The first funeral I attended- Nas-I Can...playing as we all filled the church...Amazing Grace will have me in tears in a second....
Total-Do You Think About Us-my 1st boyfriend used to play that song down the phone to me...
Ending of last week-Brandy- Brokenhearted....ok, I'll stop now...
There's a song for EVERY occasion, and emotion possible...Music is my therapy, it's my life...and I honestly can't imagine a time when music didn't offer some kind of remedy!! New R&B is alright-but I find it's the older tracks that trigger memories-both happy and sad, that help to cleanse the soul...
Ok-I think I've said enough! (this really is the radio edit BTW)Excellent post lil one!
Oh...and I forgot to mention-you look JUST like your daddy!!
@ tom_gurl: EVERYONE says I look like him. I take it as a compliment so THANKS! That man couldn't deny me if he wanted to! LOL!
That's not R&B that's soul...
@ thembi: I don't think I labeled Eric as an R&B artist...but reading back I can see how you'd come to that assumption. Thanks for making that clear, though...
I knew that was your father before reading the post...you smile just like him!
I so agree with T.G...music is indeed my therapy. It wakes me up in the morning, gets me thru the work day, keeps me sane on the commute to/from work and helps pump me with energy when I'm working out or cleaning my apt.
I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't hear music.
Girl you like like your daddy!!!!
awesome picture!
@ paula d and neill: Thanks!! = ) That's my homie, man. It's funny...I can be almost anywhere and people I don't even know will stop me and ask if I'm his daughter. His genes are strong! LOL!
